I used to wonder why some neighbours went to Catholic churches other than the parish's during Sundays and Holydays of Obligation. It seems that they don't belong to the parish! If asked, some would confess that they prefer how the Mass was celebrated. Others would admit that they like how they feel welcomed in another community which is Catholic anyway. Still some see in other communities - poor, depressed, uncared for - the need for more servants and witnesses who would bring Christ's message to those hungry and thirsty for it.
Jesus found himself unwelcome in his own town of Nazareth. He went where he is needed, where the harvest is plenty. His followers then and now have done the same. Need me ask for more?

"Physical Arrangements -c/o Youth.
"These are but some of the common expressions of the elders whenever a big event takes place in the parish. Such a sorry state for what has been greatly prized in the eyes of honourable and famous men like Jesus Christ, John Paul II, and Jose Rizal.
There is a potential in each and every youth in society, however their energy and talents are either undeveloped or exploited. Either way, young people lose heart. Some may leave the community and find better opportunities elsewhere. Others leave and become worse than they were before becoming active in serving the Lord. As for those who stay they are at risk of imitating the elders.
In all these cases the community is at a loss.Yet some remain firm and end up as mature and nurturing Christians.Catholic Filipinos are known to be devotees of the Sto Nino. It's high time we examine how deep our devotion is by looking at how we are treating the youth, the hope of the country and the Church. They're also stakeholders in God's Kingdom.
Viva Sto Nino! Viva juventud!
Hindi natin namamalayan na tayo pala ay madasaling tao. Sa mga pagkakataong may problema tayo, sa tuwing may takot sa ating mga puso, kapag tayo'y masaya, ano ang kadalasan nating nasasabi? "Diyos ko po!" " Oh my God!" " Thank you, Lord!"

Kabi-kabila ang mga problemang dumarating sa ating buhay, at halos bumigay na tayo subalit matibay ang kapit natin dahil alam nating may Diyos na handang makinig at tumulong sa atin, magsabi lang tayo.
Sabi nga ng isang kuwento, may isang lalake raw ang namatay at kaagad umakyat sa langit ang kanyang kaluluwa. Medyo VIP ang taong ito kaya siya inilibot ni San Pedro sa ilang kuwarto sa langit. Sa unang kuwarto, nakita niya ang maraming anghel na abalang-abala sa pagta-trabaho.
"Ito ang call center ng langit. Dito tinatanggap at inaayos ang mga dasal ng mga tao."
Ang sumunod na silid ay mas malaki at mas maraming anghel ang halos pagod na pagod na sa pag-gawa. " Ito ang delivery service," sabi ni San Pedro. " Dito binabalot at sinasagot ng Diyos ang bilyong-bilyong kahilingan ng mga tao."
Samantala, sa ikatlong silid naman ay iisang anghel ang naroroon at halos walang ginagawa.
" Ah, ito naman ang Acknowledgement Center. Bibihira ang trabaho dito kasi bibihira rin ang mga taong nakakaalalang magpasalamat sa Diyos once na matanggap na nila ang package mula sa Diyos."
Kaya po, sa pamamagitan ng segment na ito, inaanyayahan namin kayo, bilang isang bayan, na manalangin sa ating Panginoon , ito man ay maging kahilingan o pasasalamat. THE WORLD YOUTH DAY 2005 OFFICIAL LOGO
With its dynamic conception and its clear elements, the Logo symbolises the essence and the characteristics of the 2005 World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany.
The most important moment in the World Youth Day is the encounter with Christ, represented by the cross that dominates the Logo at its very centre. It is Christ's presence that characterises this event. The colour red symbolises the love, the passion and the pain. It indicates God's love and Jesus' death on the Cross, but reminds one of the pain present in our lives and all over the world. The cross is the main symbol of Christian hope and of redemption in Jesus Christ, which is greater than any pain.
The star symbolises divine guidance and it provides a sense of direction. It shines as the divine indication of the place in which Jesus was born. According to the Bible, it showed the wise men from the East, the Three Magi, the road they should travel to reach Jesus. After wandering for a long time, they encountered Jesus and returned home changed men. Just as it shone then on the stable in Bethlehem, today the star shines on God's house in Cologne. The star wishes to lead the young from all over the world to Cologne for the World Youth Day. You must come here!
The comet's tail represents the star's route: it comes from above, from God. Hence, it crosses the limited horizon of our earthly world. The golden colour is a reminder of God's heavenly light, which lights up the darkness of this world. All over the world, the comet symbolises the feast of the Nativity and the Epiphany.
The Cologne Cathedral represents the place in which the World Youth Day will be held. For centuries, the relics of the Three Magi have been venerated in this cathedral. The Cathedral's red colouring unites the Church with the Cross: Christ and the Church are inseparable. It is through the Church that Christ, Crucified and Risen, is present in the history of the world. The Cathedral's strongly stylised shape can also be considered as a symbol of other Churches in which a number of stages of the World Youth Day will take place in Germany.
There are various levels of meaning for the ellipse: such as the stylised letter C standing for Christ, but also for the universal communion of the Church (Communio). Furthermore, the arc represents God's protective embrace. The sky, representing God's mercy, embraces and saves the Church and the whole world, an idea also expressed by the arc's blue colouring. The arc is projected towards the cross while simultaneously opening to it. The Logo's global dynamics derive from the Cross: Christians must turn to the Cross, orientate themselves towards Jesus, Crucified and Risen, in adoration, as one can read in the motto for the XX World Youth Day: "We have come to worship Him" (Mt, 2, 2).
The lower and supporting parts of the arc remind one of the river Rhine and of a boat: the church is like a ship, also in memory of Noah's redeeming ark. The blue of this arc symbolises water and therefore also the water of Baptism.

MANONG

I have been called "Manong" by my younger siblings and cousins. "Manong", I think, is the corruption of the Spanish word "hermano" which literally means "brother". Never have I thought that my colleagues in the AP Youth and Anluwage would call me just the same.
It touches my heart though, every time I hear them all call me "Manong" as if there's an aura of respect that they have bestowed on me. In fact, I am more humbled because these people, especially my colleagues whom I have no blood relations with, have considered me as their own. They look up to me and I have tried to support them in every step of the way. We are one and the same, bonded with the vision of our group. More so, we are united under one God and Father through the gift of Baptism.
To be called "Manong" is more of a challenge than an honour. In the same vein, to be called "Christian" is more of a responsibility - to both God and other Christians - than a privilege card to heaven.
GOD'S PREVAILING EPIPHANY

Serving at the parish church was something I have dreamed about. I saw it as a chance to give glory to the Lord through whatever I can offer: my time, talents, and treasure. Like-minded people welcomed and supported me as I began my ministry in the parish. However, I came across a host of King Herods, those people whose eyebrows were kept raised as they saw how my colleagues and I served, those people who were always opposing any changes that I have proposed, those people who never wanted to be outdone in the community. Yet I continued my work, until these Herods - upset as they were - concocted intrigues against me that led to my untimely "demise" from the parish where I first saw the light of Christ.
In spite of this rather sorrowful event, Jesus continued to reveal Himself to me. I may be "nawala sa sirkulasyon" in the parish, but that did not block Him from calling me to serve Him in other communities. His call has never been unanswered. Like the wisemen, I go to where He sends me bringing my gifts to His people, be it in Manila and now, in the UK.
The Herods may have their way, but God's way will always prevail.

A PRAYER TO OUR LADY

O Mary, our Mother and Queen, the whole Church celebrates time and again a year dedicated to the Eucharist. During this period we recall how the Lord Jesus humbled himself to become our spiritual food and drink.We also commemorate that memorable occasion – 150 years ago – when the Church promulgated the belief that God, in choosing you to be His Mother, preserved you from original sin. Thus you are rightly to be called “Immaculate Conception”.Teach us, O Virgin full of grace, how to embrace a life of holiness so that, freed from sin and filled with thanksgiving, we may worthily receive Christ’s Body and Blood every time we participate at Mass.Pray, O most worthy tabernacle of Jesus, that having received our Savior in Holy Communion we may be transformed as His faithful and courageous witnesses bearing His message to a world which is in dire need of salvation and freedom.Be with us, O Immaculate Patroness of the Philippines and of the Archdiocese of Manila, in these two festivities that we may walk in the true path towards the reward of the Eucharist – eternal life with your Son and our Brother, Jesus Christ. WHEN WE WERE KIDS

It was in the early 80s when it started to flood --- on a sunny day, mind you! It becomes worse when rains started to pour. These high tides came even during Christmastime. Actually, they start to arrive in May. Strangely, people managed to have their firecrackers lit during New Year’s Eve. So used have we been to them that whenever the year ends, we looked forward to our Chinaman neighbour’s calendar gifts with high tide predictions. Streets near the Estero de Sunog Apog like Gapan, T Earnshaw, Cavite, V del Fierro, and Antipolo were virtually erased from the map of Gagalangin at certain times of the day (or night) whenever the sea level rises.
It was a patintero with the grimy waters. You have to wake up early for work or church before seeing a millilitre of flood. One time I went to church wearing short pants. I later washed and changed before serving at Mass. On occasions that I have to go to church or elsewhere and go home late at night, I have to fold my pants – thank God they’re loose! – several times before I started to test the waters. They’re cool at times, but I was afraid to stay for long lest I fall prey to leptospirosis.
When T Earnshaw St was up to its eyeballs, I have to go to Rotonda to catch a jeepney. On the transport, you could hear various stories from co-passengers who braved the floods. Jeepney drivers are known to be wise guys every time this catastrophe hits the town. There’s re-routing to this and that street and before you know it, you’re either in Balut or back to Blumentritt.
Gagalanginenos were resourceful though; the sidecar became real and made its dwelling among us! However, you have to pray hard that the chap on the wheel won’t slap you with an exorbitant fee.
Yet floods have been a headache across Manila. After Gagalanginenos went through with the floods in their own yard, here comes another treat in Blumentritt: flood plus a network of neighbours. One home along the riles would welcome you into their abode so you can cross through a makeshift bridge to another home. Just don’t forget to drop your piso in the collection tabo.
People tended to say nasty things about Gagalangin being a flooded area. That’s already history. Now we are grateful that things got better when a pumping system was introduced in the early 90s. So successful it has been that Gagalangin remained “dry” while its neighbours submerge in water. I just hope that both the government and people would cooperate in maintaining and upgrading this project for years and generations to come. I hope too that this respected district of Manila will rise from the other floods that have inundated it up to this time: poverty, drugs, materialism, and dirty politics.

BASURA SA PANAHON NG KAPASKUHAN

Isang barrio fiesta ang nagaganap hindi lang sa Gagalangin, kundi sa buong mundo kapag dumarating ang Pasko. Nandyan ang mga handaan, inuman, bigayan ng regalo, paglalagay ng mga gayak, at marami pang iba. Masaya ang tanawin.
Subalit kapag natapos na ang selebrasyon, ga-bundok na basura ang kailangang ilabas mula sa mga tahanan oras na humuni ang trak na dilaw. Minsan pa nga, sa sobrang dami ng basura, agad-agad na natin itong inilalabas bago pa kolektahin. Sa lakas ng hangin nagiging isang dambuhalang tambakan ang lansangan. Kaya nga binago na ang linya ng isang awit-pamasko: "Mabaho ang simoy ng hangin...".
Hindi lahat ng basura ay basura. Halimbawa na rito ang papel - dyaryo, komiks, magazine, atbp. Ihiwalay ninyo sila at isama sa mga lumang lata at bote (maliban sa bote ng beer at softdrinks na dapat isoli sa tindahan ni Mang Jaime o Aling Anita). Ibenta kay Mang Kulas, ang walang kupas na magbobote. Pwede ring ipagbili ninyo ang mga lumang magazine malapit sa Banco de Oro sa Avenida at sa may National Bookstore sa Recto. Ang iba pang klase ng papel ay maari ring gamiting scratch paper. Ang papel, lata, at bote ay mga halimbawa ng basura na nire-recycle. Ang lumang dyaryo'y nagiging libro para sa mga estudyante ng ICAM. Ang lumang lata, bagong lata ng 555 sardines, hagdan ng mga repairman ng PLDT o eroplano ng PAL. Ang lumang bote, bagong bote ng Rufina Patis.
Tipunin din natin ang mga plastic bag na galing sa 711, Jollibee, Mercury Drug, palengke, o anumang sari-sari store. Isa sa mga sakit ng ulo ng buong daigdig ay ang pagsira sa mga plastic na tinatapon natin. Aabutin ng sandaang taon bago masira ang karamihan sa kanila. Hangga't maaari gamitin ninyo sila. Kung mamamalengke kayo sa pwesto ni Cely, magdala na kayo ng inyong lalagyan. Sulitin ninyo ang paggamit ng mga plastic bags at iba pang yari sa plastic gaya ng mga kubyertos.Gamitin sila hanggang sa talagang wala na silang pakinabang.
Isa pang maaaring mapakinabangan ay ang mga balat ng itlog, gulay, at prutas gayun din ang mga bulok na pagkain. Ilagay sila sa isang lalagyan at ibigay kay Aling Ising para sa kanyang mga alagang baboy - tamang-tama para sa darating na pista o Pasko!
Ang isa pang alternatibo sa ganitong uri ng basura ay paggawa ng compost. Ang compost ay ginagamit sa mga hardin para maging pataba sa mga halaman o kaya'y para tulungan ang ating mga pananim na makasipsip ng higit pang tubig at mineral. Pagsama-samahin ang mga balat ng itlog, gulay, at prutas pati na ang mga naglalaglagang ninyong buhok (pati na ng mga alagang aso't pusa). Maghanda ng isang malaking lumang timba. Butasan ang puwit ng timba at ilagay sa isang malupang lugar sa inyong hardin na madalas tamaan ng sikat ng araw. Ibuhos ang lahat ng mga pinagsama-samang basura, basain ng tubig, at takpan ng trapal o anumang yari sa plastic. Haluin at basain linggu-linggo. Maghintay ng 2-3 buwan. Kapag kulay-lupa na ang inyong basura puwede na silang lagay sa lupa malapit sa inyong mga pananim. Kay gandang paghahanda sa panahon ng tag-araw!
At anumang matira sa inyong basurahan - matapos ihiwalay ang hindi pa dapat ibasura - yan ang ibigay ninyo kinabukasan kay Mang Oca basurero.
